NIN
Nin is the first Croatian royal town and a place of great historical significance. Located on a small island connected to the mainland by bridges, Nin combines millennia-old heritage, natural beauty, and a peaceful Mediterranean atmosphere, making it a perfect destination for a relaxed day trip.
Gregory of Nin – a statue that brings good luck when touched
One of Nin’s most famous attractions is the monumental statue of Bishop Gregory of Nin, created by sculptor Ivan Meštrović. According to tradition, touching his big toe brings good luck, so almost every visitor stops by the statue and leaves a mark on the now-legendary shiny toe. The statue symbolizes the struggle for the use of the vernacular language and the Glagolitic script in liturgy and represents an important part of Croatian cultural history.
Nin Saltworks – a centuries-old tradition
The Nin Saltworks are among the oldest and most distinctive saltworks on the Adriatic. Salt is still produced here by hand using traditional methods, with the help of sun, wind, and sea—a completely natural process. A visit to the saltworks includes a walk through the salt fields, an introduction to the production process, a tour of a small museum, and the opportunity to purchase ecological Nin salt, renowned for its exceptional purity and quality.
Museums and cultural heritage
Nin offers a rich selection of small but valuable museums:
-
The Museum of Nin Antiquities, featuring exhibits from prehistory to the Middle Ages, including remains of a Roman temple, artifacts from the era of early Croatian rulers, and numerous archaeological finds.
-
The Salt Museum, located within the saltworks, which presents the traditional production methods and the history of salt-making in Nin.
Nin is also home to one of the oldest Christian buildings in Europe—the Church of the Holy Cross, often called “the smallest cathedral in the world.” The church also functions as a sundial.
